Since the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing has been a pillar industry of the national economy. In the competitive development of economic globalization and technological globalization, the division of labor in the industrial chain is globalized. Among them, manufacturing, especially high-end manufacturing, is of great significance for a country to build a modern industrial system and enhance international competitiveness. High-end manufacturing has become the key core technology industry in international competition for science and technology powers. Taking the United States as research objects, the article analyzes the development status and industry evolution characteristics of the manufacturing industry and its sub-sectors from 2000 to 2018. Research shows that the evolution of the US manufacturing industry has undergone the transition from “hollowing out” to backflow. The high-end advanced manufacturing industry has been continuously optimized and upgraded. Traditionally advantageous industries have maintained their advantages for a long time. National top-level design, scientific and technological innovation and a favorable innovation ecosystem play important driving roles, making chemical products, computers and electronic products, and transportation equipment manufacturing advantageous industries. The experience and enlightenment of U.S. manufacturing development to China is to promote the high-quality development of manufacturing industries and the implementation of the strategy of manufacturing power from the aspects of advanced manufacturing cluster construction, innovation ecosystem construction, optimization and upgrading of manufacturing structure, investment in technological innovation, integrated development of manufacturing and service industries, and well-known brand building.
